PROS AND CONS OF LEATHER

Pros and Cons of Leather for Your Furniture

As a furniture maker, Soho Living customises furniture pieces in a wide range of styles and types. Over the years, many customers have asked to have their furniture done in leather. At our workshops in Singapore and Malaysia, Soho Living provides a wide range of semi aniline and pigmented leather. Leather is great, but it may not be for everyone. In this article, we’d like to share the pros and cons of leather for customised furniture.

Price

Leather is also an expensive material for furniture. For many homeowners, the durability of the leather is a plus despite the cost. But before you decide to invest in leather furniture, there are other factors to consider as stated below.

Maintenance

Even when price is not an issue, leather furniture may not be for everyone. While spills on leather furniture can be cleaned easily with a damp cloth, it needs regularly moisturising to keep the material supple. Another point to note is that if you get plenty of direct sunlight in your home, leather can fade over time. So if you prefer your home to be filled with natural light, fabric-covered furniture is your best bet.

Durability

Given the right conditions, however, leather furniture can last a very long time. Among the various upholstery materials such as leather, fabrics and synthetic leather, leather is the most durable of them all. Not only that, leather is a fire-resistant material by nature.

Design

With leather, the furniture designs can sometimes be limited to the size of the hide. The design of the furniture might need to be adjusted to accommodate the limitations of the leather pieces. Compared to fabrics and synthetic leather, too, leather comes in fewer colour options. The choice of patterns is also limited to natural hide patterns or patchworks of leather in different colours and natural patterns. That said, leather furniture is beautiful and classic, and therefore can fit most interior design styles easily.

Comfort

If your home has an even temperature, leather furniture can provide immense comfort. Many pet owners prefer to use leather furniture because animal hairs and spills can be easily cleaned from the surface of leather. While leather continues to be a much-loved material for sofas and chairs, whether you choose leather, fabric or synthetic leather depends on your lifestyle needs.
